These paintings have developed where a confidence in the medium has paired itself well with the subject matter.
I feel that roads exemplify much of our experience of modern Britain though they often go completely un-noticed. It is partly because they go un-noticed that I have been able to use them as a stage where the paint itself becomes the more prominent subject, allowing me to enjoy developing pictorial elements more freely and move closer to abstraction.
These paintings particularly have been influenced by Philip Guston and the painterly language he employs, as well as by David Bomberg, Frank Auerbach and many of the 20th Century Action Painters.
